A 21st Century Education

No Child Left Behind and Global Competitiveness from New Learning Institute

A conversation with Yong Zhao, Professor at Michigan State University

Yong Zhao is a professor at Michigan State University. In this presentation he shares his ideas about the educational system in the United States and what he feels is the most important aspect of education. Two quotations from this film are:

“People ask, ‘Why are you so critical of a system from which you were created?’ and I say I am successful in spike of a system of standardized testing, not because of”.

“American Education system is now driven by No Child Left Behind and other relevant reforms to push us toward standardization, centralization and valuing test scores which, I think, is moving America away from the future because the global economy requires niche talents, requires us people to become artists, to become creators, to become musicians, become innovators, become people who are passionate about their work—who are also living a happier life that understands and respects other cultures.”

Q & A with Robert Compton Mar 6, 2008

Robert Compton's Video, Two Million Minutes, is a project he funded and created that spotlights the differences between the United States School System and the schools in India and China. Robert Compton talks about his documentary Two Million Minutes: A Global Examination, which compares and contrasts the educational experiences of six students; two from each of the countries of India, China, and the United States in which he is quoted as saying the following:

“..education drives our whole economy…it is our most important investment”.

“the money is moving to where the brains are”

“where the brains are is where the companies get started”

“that has serious implications for our economy”

solution? “multi tiered solution” “It’s not just the schools” “parents, community rewards, cultural norms.”

“each community has to make its own decision.” “Federal programs are not the answer. It’s got to start with the parents and the students and the community.”

“unless the US wakes up and realizes the new trend…we are not going to be the leader anymore”.

"...countries like China and India are now competing in the international economy when 25 years ago their countries were in political turmoil and did not compete in international economy."
